AGE AND BEHAVIOR: RETRIEVING MEMORIES IN SUMMARY

Recall is thought to involve the search and retrieval of information in the memory store; recognition is thought not to involve retrieval. Utilizing this distinction, adult subjects of wide age range were given tests of both recall and recognition memory, and differences with age were found to be greater in recall than in recognition. Thus, the aged were said to suffer loss of retrieval functioning. Such results and conclusions, however, are seen mainly in studies of new learning. When required to retrieve very old, basic information, such as the names of objects or of selected category items, little or no retrieval difficulties are seen at any age.
There are other interpretations as well. For example, with recognition memory, only a partial learning of the given information seems to be required to perform well; with recall memory, a total learning is necessary. If older people acquire and store information less well than young people, and thus have only a partial knowledge of the total, this could explain the recall-recognition disparity. In this case storage is seen as a problem. Storage involves both the placing of information in memory and keeping it there. In regard to the latter, the length of time a memory is in storage may be a factor in the age decline. Studies show that when recall and recognition tests were made soon after learning and one week or one month afterward, both recall and recognition memories were seen to fall off with age. Thus problems of retrieval and storage both appear to be present in later life.
Search and retrieval go together. A clever study was devised to estimate the rate that people of different ages search their memory stores. The procedure of this study involved speed of recognition in relation to the number of items in the memory store. The speed with which several items are searched relative to the speed with which only a few are searched provides estimates of search rate over and beyond limitations in speed of response attributable to motor functions. Older adults were found slower in their rates of search than younger adults, and it was thought that this becomes more and more a handicap to them as there are more items of information to search.
