AGE AND BEHAVIOR: RESEARCH METHODS - AGE AND TIME OF MEASUREMENT CONFOUNDED - SUBJECT EFFECTS - MOTIVATION AND INTEREST

In 1919 male freshmen students at Iowa State College were tested in a group with the Army Alpha Intelligence Test. Approximately 30 years later, Owens (1953) was able to locate and retest nearly a third of the ex-students. There were eight subtests and on four of them increases were found. It is not necessary here to consider all the factors, apart from age, which may have made for these results—many of these were considered by Jones (1959) and by Botwinick (1967)—but one factor is relevant here. As Kuhlen (1963) pointed out:
Tests administered to groups at freshman week in college ... are seldom administered under conditions of high motivation. When these same subjects are retested individually under vastly different conditions of motivation at a later time, important questions can be raised as to the meaning of the obtained differences.
Motivation and interest on the part of the subjects seem to be a special aspect of the sampling problem. Miles (1934) reported age decrements in a two-year follow-up study of a general population, but increments, except for the oldest subjects, with a subsample of subjects who voluntarily chose to be retested because of their interest in the study.
Motivation and interest are but two subject effects which are part of the time-of-measurement problem. There are many others, e.g., fatigue, ill health, personal concern, etc. If these effects are appreciable in a study, the observed changes will be more a reflection of the measurement variable than the maturational variable.
