AGE AND BEHAVIOR: RESEARCH METHODS - AGE AND TIME OF MEASUREMENT CONFOUNDED - ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS - LABORATORY

So far we have discussed subject and experimenter influences as aspects of time-of-measurement problems. There are laboratory and social factors which also are important, but, unfortunately, their impacts often are not even known to exist. Examples of laboratory and social effects will elucidate this.
Laboratory. A reaction time experiment was carried out which involved comparisons between young adult and old adult subjects. The study was a cross-sectional study, not a longitudinal one, but, since the data were being collected over a relatively long period of time, the experience can very easily be applied to both types of studies. In the actual experiment, most of the subjects of one age group were examined at the beginning of data collection, and most of the other age group were examined months later. (Interdigitation of subjects of both age groups is the correct procedure, but the desired type of subject is not always available and often this less correct procedure is followed.)
The experiment was proceeding smoothly until it was noticed, almost by accident, that the response key used in the reaction time measurement was bent—only a few millimeters, but bent enough to cause doubt about the similarity of the measurement made at the beginning of the experiment and later stages of it. All the associated electronic gear was working perfectly; from all indications, so was the investigator, but the simple component of the total environment, the little metal lever of a micro-switch, used as the response key, was bent. How reliable is a measured change in reaction time if the times of measurement involve years and the laboratory equipment is either very old or replaced by different equipment?
