The laboratory environment may change in its physical characteristics, and this also introduces artifacts of time of measurement. The laboratory change may be imperceptible, but large enough, nevertheless, to affect the measurements. It is not uncommon that a move from one city to another, or even from one room in a building to another, will make for slightly different measurements.
The immediate social environment is important in affecting measurements. Positive impacts such as new opportunities and new sources of cognitive stimulation, and negative influences such as death of spouses and loss of income, can affect the longitudinal results. The subjects, the experimenter, the physical and social environmental influences together constitute the time-of-measurement confusion with age.
To unravel the confounding, three research designs have been proposed: they are called cross-sequential, time-sequential, and cohort-sequential. These designs appear the best available for developmental research but their value in the published literature has been negated by the underlying assumptions that have been made. Despite this, the designs, with careful interpretation, have the potential of providing better understanding of the three important confounded variables: age, cohort, and time of measurement.
