AGE AND BEHAVIOR: RESEARCH METHODS IN SUMMARY
The most typical study in aging involves the cross-sectional method, a method by which two or more age groups are compared during the single time period of the examination. This method is appropriate for describing differences among groups born during different eras, but it does not permit unequivocal explanation regarding maturational processes. The reason for this is that the age of the person is synonymous with the cultural context of his time of birth and upbringing. It is said, therefore, that cross-sectional studies confound age and cohort.
The longitudinal method, a method by which the same people are examined during several periods of time, usually with a number of years between examinations, also involves confounding between age and culture. This is not often recognized; it certainly is not often emphasized. It is referred to in longitudinal research as the confounding between age and time of measurement. Time of measurement involves three types of factors, each related to immediate or recent environmental impacts. There are subject factors such as motivation, interest, fatigue, practice, health, personal problems, and others, each affecting performances. If these are different at one time of measurement than another, they cloud what effect aging processes may have on the measurement.
There are experimenter effects too. These have not been investigated in aging studies, but it is not unreasonable to expect that since the experimenter is not the same person, i.e., does not function the same way, throughout the years of testing, this would have a bearing on the subject's performance. The interaction between subject and experimenter effects may negate any clear interpretation of aging effects.
