AGE AND BEHAVIOR: RESEARCH METHODS - COHORT AND TIME OF MEASUREMENT CONFOUNDED
It was seen that cross-sectional studies confound age and cohort effects and that longitudinal studies confound these effects too, but mostly it is the confusion between aee and time of measurement to which Schaie (1965, 1967) attended. To clarify these complex functions, Schaie indicated the need to investigate yet a third type of study, one which also involves confounded sources of variation, in this case between cohort and time of measurement. Schaie called this type of study time lag, possibly because there is a lag in the time of measurement during which people of different cohorts are examined. In the usual longitudinal study, a single cohort is measured at different periods of time. In time lag studies, several cohorts are examined, each at a different period of time.
This may be seen more clearly. Cells G, E, C constitute a time lag group comparison. Subjects born in 1910 and tested in 1960 (aged 50 years) are compared to subjects of the same age but born in 1920 and tested in 1970, and subjects born in 1930 and tested in 1980. It may be seen in Table 19.1 that cells D and B represent a time lag group comparison too, as do cells H and F.
