The experimenter effect has become of great interest to psychologists doing behavioral research (e.g., Rosenthal, 1966). It is known, for example, that investigators who are white may obtain different data in black communities than investigators who are black. Sex of the experimenter has been known to influence the nature of the research data. An investigator who likes animals and fondles them may bring out different learning performances in rats than an experimenter who is afraid or dislikes animals. A clinical tester who is experienced may find different test scores than one who is a novice. It seems not unreasonable to expect that the age of the experimenter would also be an important variable in the determination of research findings. Donahue (1965) emphasized the need to examine and control the experimenter age effect. It is possible that this effect is different in the administration of tests to people of different ages.
If longitudinal research involves years between testings, the same experimenter surely is a different person at time 2 than at time 1. If different experimenters are involved, then this factor may be crucial. The interaction between subject effects and experimenter effects may also be important. This area of potential methodological importance has yet to be explored.
